Upgrades to lighting in a parking lot at Flowers Drive and Erwin Road will make some spaces temporarily unavailable during the project
Duke community members who use the Graduate Center Lot at Flowers Drive and Erwin Road will soon have a brighter walk to and from their cars.
Work on a project to replace the lighting in the lot at the northwest corner of Central Campus will begin July 18 and continue into the late fall. While there will be spaces in different sections of the lot unavailable during the duration of the project, the lot will remain open.
The work will unfold in four phases, each tied to a specific section of the lot where work will be done. The first phase, which takes place in the northeast corner of the lot, will result in 137 parking spaces being unavailable.
Often referred to as the GC Lot, the area is used mainly by Duke University Health System staff, who need to access the lot around the clock.
The project will result in 45 new light poles featuring underground wiring and bright, energy efficient LED lights. The upgraded lighting will improve the safety of the lot and make the lighting more reliable and easier to maintain.
"This is going to be a great improvement once it's all complete," said Duke Facilities Management Project Manager Hector M. Hernandez. "At night, the lighting levels will be higher, you’ll feel more comfortable walking through it to go to work or to your car."
