Part of a Boeing C-17 Globemaster III aircraft fell out of the sky and landed in a South Carolina school parking lot Thursday afternoon, according to a source.

A high-ranking military pilot told WCIV it was a rear tail cone of a Boeing C-17. Additionally, the military was made aware the object flew off a plane.

A viewer submitted a photo of what is believed to be a part of the plane.

The source said the incident happened outside Divine Redeemer School in Hanahan around 4 p.m.

The plane later landed safely after a malfunction in flight, Joint Base Charleston officials detailed Thursday night.

The crew of the C-17 notified Joint Base Charleston and returned to base.

A team recovered the piece of the aircraft and no injuries or property damage were reported, officials said.

The incident is under investigation.

WCIV reached out to local authorities for more details.

Boeing has made headlines throughout most of 2024 after a panel used to plug an area reserved for an exit door on the Boeing 737 Max 9 jetliner blew out Jan. 5, shortly after the flight took off from Portland, Ore., forcing the plane to return to Portland International Airport.
