The City of Cape Town’s work to improve public lighting and sustainable energy practices is shining bright in Khayelitsha as the Energy Directorate kicks off an LED installation project.
With an investment of R3.5 million, the City is retrofitting existing high-mast lights in Makhaza with energy-efficient LED lighting, intended to enhance visibility, safety and sustainability in the area.
This initiative forms part of a city-wide effort to upgrade public lighting infrastructure, providing numerous benefits for the community.
By increasing area visibility, the new LED lights will not only improve safety at night but also act as a deterrent to criminal activity.

Additionally, the enhanced lighting is expected to boost economic activity in the evenings, fostering entrepreneurship and community development.
The installation of LED fittings requires meticulous planning and specialised equipment, including a 30-tonne crane truck.
City engineers and experts are working diligently across the city to ensure the success of the project, which will continue over the coming months and years.
Residents are urged to report vandalism, theft or illegal connections to the authorities, to ensure the sustainability of the project.
